1. Target Dust Mites
- Invest in allergen-proof (encasing) covers for mattresses, box springs, and pillows. These zippered covers create a barrier against dust mites.
- Wash all bedding (sheets, blankets, pillowcases) in hot water weekly to kill mites and remove allergens.
- Limit dust-collecting items such as heavy drapes, upholstered furniture, and excessive throw pillows in bedrooms.
- Dust mites thrive in humidity. Maintain indoor humidity below 50%. A simple hygrometer can help monitor levels. If humidity is high, use a dehumidifier—ideally running continuously near the bed.
2. Control Pet Dander
Pet dander (shed skin flakes) is lightweight and can remain suspended in the air long after your furry friend has left the room.
Audit Tips:
- Establish “pet-free” zones, especially bedrooms of anyone with allergies. Dander can take weeks to clear, so consistency matters.
- Use a high-efficiency HEPA air purifier in rooms where you spend the most time. These can filter out up to 99.97% of airborne dander.
- Encourage non-allergic family members to brush pets frequently—ideally outdoors—to reduce shedding indoors.
3. Battle Mold and Moisture
Mold loves damp, dark places, and running your home’s heat can create condensation and humidity that encourage mold growth.
Audit Tips:
- Check moisture-prone areas such as under sinks, around shower curtains, and refrigerator drip pans. Clean visible mold with detergent and water or a diluted bleach solution.
- Use exhaust fans while showering and cooking, and leave the bathroom fan running for at least 30 minutes after showering to remove excess moisture.
Remember:
During the winter months, your immune system is already working hard to fight off colds and flu. Reducing your allergen load allows your body to focus its energy more effectively, leading to better symptom control and fewer severe asthma and allergy reactions.
